The information on this page applies only to our brand of essential oils. The reason this information is specific to only Young Living is that we produce medicinal, therapeutic grade essential oils.
Check out an essential oil reference guide for more information. Also see Young Living’s official Oil Safety Guide.
Ways to Utilize Essential Oils
Aromatically: Young Living essential oils can be inhaled or diffused using a cold air diffuser so as to not damage the oils with heat. You can also place on a cottonball and place in various places or breathe in deeply while cupping your hand over your nose.
Topically: Young Living essential oils can be applied topically to the skin. Many oils can be applied “neat” or undiluted but some oils are considered “hot” (for example Thieves and Clove) and are best used with a carrier oils. Great carrier oils are organic coconut oil or Young Living’s V-6 oil.
Internally: Young Living’s oils are therapeutic grade which means that many of these oils are safe for internal consumption, as a dietary supplement. You can put a few drops in a glass or water or milk, place a couple drops under your tongue (sublingual) and even make capsule with different combinations of oils based on how you are utilizing the oils.
Things you should know regarding “Oil Safety”
*Essential oils are oil-soluble, not water-soluble
Oil and water do not mix. If for example an oil gets into your eye it will sting, do not try to wash it out, this will only drive the oil into your system. If you have used too much of an oil, you should dilute with a carrier oil.
My preferred carrier oils are organic coconut oil or Young Living’s V-6 oil.
Some oils can cause pigmentation changes and skin burns if the area the oil was applied is exposed to UV rays (sunlight). Use caution with citrus oils such as lemon, lime, grapefruit, bergamot, angelica, etc. Always check the bottle labels for specific information about usage, especially directions related to sunlight.
*Oils & Pregnancy
Caution should be used when using essential oils with hormone-like properties, such as clary sage, fennel, sage. No adverse reactions have been reported in humans who have used these oils during pregnancy, caution should be taken, as with any products used during pregnancy. Consult your physician for further advice and recommendations.
*Oils Use for Infants & Children
For children diluting oils is always a great idea, especially with a first use. Remember pure essential oils (such as Young Living oils) are extremely potent. 1-2 drops can be diluted in 1/2-1 teaspoon of a carrier oil such as organic coconut oil or V-6.
*Caution in regards to Ears
It is not recommended to drop oils directly into the ear canal, they can be diluted and rubbed all around the ear and placed on a cottonball just inside the ear.
*Caution in regards to Eyes
Do not drop essential oils into the eye. Placing oils around the eye is okay and again use a carrier oil and dilute.
Caution should be used again with some of our “hot” oils: Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Oregano (read your label for recommendations).
*Storage of Oils
Protect oils from heat and light (temperature should be less than 90 degrees). They can maintain their maximum potency for many years if stored properly.
*Dilute oils with discomfort
If you have discomfort or are more sensitive always ere on the side of caution and dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil. Try slowing down with your oil use and/or stop applying if reaction occurs. Use common sense and again consult you reference guide and/or health care provider.
*Do not use plastic
Do not use plastic drinkware and add oils for ingesting. The essential oils will pull out the petrochemicals. Use glass or stainless steel.
Essential Oil Tid Bits
*A 15 ml bottle of essential oil contains approximately 250 drops and a 5 ml bottle contains 80-100 drops. The amount vary based on viscosity of the particular oil.
*Inhalation is the fastest route for the essential oil to enter the body . The second fastest is application via the bottoms of the feet or to the outside of the ears (never drop oil into the ear canal). Testing showed that oils reached the heart, thyroid, and pancreas within 3 seconds.
*Every essential oil has its own FREQUENCY, as does each organ and every illness too. Frequency is attracted to like frequencies. Low frequency can make physical changes in the body. Middle frequency oils can make emotional changes in the body. High frequency oils can make spiritual changes in the body.
*One drop of essential oil can cover every cell in our body. Starting slow is a good idea, sometimes less is more.
*Feet application of essential oils is a quick way to get them into the body and a great way to use on children.
*Warm compress can help to drive an oil into the body quicker.
